The Soul of Ruka Ceramics: Where Story Meets Clay
The Story of Ruka
Ruka Ceramics is an exploration of equilibrium. It is a creative practice where the upper realm of spirit meets the grounding element of earth. Based in London, I craft hand-built, illustrated ceramics that celebrate the quiet harmony between form, story, and feeling. The name Ruka, meaning soul or breath, serves as a reminder that clay is more than mere earth; it is a vessel for memory and a channel for connection.
Meet the Maker
Gulipek Inceoglu Aksu
My journey began with a desire to speak through an ancient medium. With a background in engineering, I approach clay as a form of mindful design where the precision of structure eventually gives way to the flow of intuition. After moving from Turkey to London, I found in clay a language that transcends words. My practice is a reflection of Wu Wei—the art of effortless action—allowing inspiration to arise naturally and find its own silhouette.
The Creative Flow
For me, creation begins long before the clay is touched. It starts with a visual flow or a narrative thread captured through sketching, then meticulously translated into stoneware. I believe art can whisper truths that language cannot reach, transforming humble clay into vessels of simple wonder. Drawing from archetypes, nature, and the healing power of the natural world, I explore the delicate dance between light and shadow. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind storyteller, inviting you into a dialogue between the seen and the felt.
The Art of Slow Craft
Every Ruka piece is a celebration of slow craft. Using traditional techniques like coiling and pinching, I treat each vessel as a unique exploration. Vibrant, layered underglazes bring to life a playful lexicon of ancient symbols and animal spirits, preserved under a transparent glow. Once a piece is complete, I let it go, believing its true journey begins when it becomes a part of your daily ritual. It is my hope that these objects serve as gentle reminders that balance, much like a vessel, is something that can be crafted by hand.
